The University of Rijeka (UoR) has
established a Cleaner Production Centre within a project funded
by the European Union under the Tempus Education and Training
Programme. The total amount of the EU grant for the project is
500.000 EUR. The main objective of the project is to set up a centre
that will educate staff from Industry and Public Administration in
Croatia in the various aspects of Cleaner Production.
The idea behind Cleaner Production is to avoid end - of - pipe treatments of emissions and wastes by acting at the source through
changes in production processes and services. In turn, this yields a
reduced consumption of resources and minimization of waste.
Therefore, implementing CP practices can cut costs, reduce
environmental risks and identify new opportunities for production
processes and services.
The project will run for three years,
starting from September 2006 and ending in September 2009.
The centre will be self-sustainable after the completion of this
three year project, and will have a number of experts who will
provide valuable services to industry, government and the society in
the fields of Cleaner Production and Sustainable development.
The centre will foster the transfer of knowledge as well as the
creation of networks between industry, central government
authorities and NGOs. This would eventually benefit our society and
the environment aiding Croatia in reaching the goals of sustainable
development.
The project will thus establish an adult life-long learning (LLL)
centre to be fully in function also after the project itself
finishes. LLL is the issue of major concern in modern Europe and
will allow the University of Rijeka to have fully equipped Centre in
which it will organise e.g. one-year courses for the newly-formed
professions in industry. The University will thus have the
opportunity to be more flexible in teaching and have a Centre in
which new professions are born every day will be recognised and
promoted having in mind the progress of industry in the whole region
and the country.
