Rector Lučin Signs Petition
Friday, Nov 25 2016

The University of Rijeka Rector, Pero Lučin M.D., Ph.D., signed a petition this morning regarding violence against women. The signing was organized by the Centre for Women's Participation in Society and held in the centre of Rijeka (at the Jadran Square) on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

''Actually, it's sad that today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we as a society need to mark this occasion in terms of an environment, a society, where such a form of violence is still even in existence. Evryone in Croatia, but in Europe as well, must invest maximum effort that this type of violence, any type of violence for that matter, be completely exterminated and a zero tolerance policy implemented for any and all kinds of violence. We as a civilized society must publicly speak out for those who do not have a voice and condemn every type of violence as absolutely unacceptable as well as inexcusable. Worrisome statistics which show that approximately 25% Europeans continue to think that e.g. a sexual encounter without consent could possibly be alright, need to prompt political authorities, as well as scientific and cultural circles, along with public persons to speak out about this issue with a resolute attitude against such crimes! Croatia hasn't as yet ratified the European Union Convention which serves to protect women from violence and I am using this opportunity to alert the relevant authorities to do so as soon as possible,'' the Rector stated.
