Rector at UB Forum on Vis

The University of Rijeka Rector, professor Snježana Prijić Samaržija, Ph.D., took part in the University Business Forum conference titled "Dual education, practice, entrepreneurship and employability in the focus", held on October 19th-20th 2017 at the VERN 'Island School Academic-Business Center on the island of Vis.

For the first time, Croatia hosted this Forum, which brought together representatives of European and Croatian higher education institutions, employers, ministries and agencies, who compared Croatian and European experiences and possible sectoral recommendations in the field of higher education and economy, or rather the labor market.

Speakers at the forum were: Labor and Pension System Minister Marko Pavić, Ph.D., Ivana Modena, founder and president of the Swiss business school known as Sustainability Management School (SUMAS), which was the first in the world to undertake sustainable development management studies, followed by Ivica Mudrinić from the National Competitiveness Council and Doris Pack, the former chair of the European Parliament's Comittee on Culture and Education and the president of the VERN' Council.






Panel discussions and workshops were attended by the Rectors of the University of Rijeka and Split, and VERN 'University, representatives of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, Croatian Employers' Associations, EURASHE - European Association of Institutions in Higher Education, experts in education, economics and labor market from colleges and institutions from Germany, Greece, France, the Netherlands, USA, Slovakia, Ireland and Croatia, representatives of state agencies and successful companies and students.

Participants exchanged experiences and examples of good practice on dual education, aligning binary education system with labor market needs, learning at work, international practice, role of high schools in student employability monitoring, role of economy and politics in fostering entrepreneurship at faculties, social entrepreneurship and innovation and education for entrepreneurship.

The University Business Forum was launched in 2008 as a European initiative meant to promote the modernization of higher education and cooperation between the education and the economy sector, and thus facilitate wider implementation of the 'Europe 2020' strategy. The first University-Business Forum in Croatia and the region is organized by the European Commission and its partner VERN 'in cooperation with the Croatian Employers' Association, the University of Rijeka and Split and with the support of the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts, and the Ministry of Labor and Pension System.
