Thursday, Nov 23 2017

The President of the Republic of Croatia, Mrs. Kolinda Grabar Kitarović, accompanied by her husband Mr. Jakov Kitarović, attended the ceremonial opening of the Book Exhibition from the Jesuit Collection on November 22, 2017, marking the 390th anniversary of the founding of the Jesuit College in Rijeka.

Madam President was greeted at the University Library by Prof. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., University of Rijeka Rector, and Mrs. Senka Tomljanović, the Head of the University Library Rijeka. Other participants of the program were: Monsignor Ivan Devčić, Archbishop of Rijeka, Mr. Zlatko Komadina, Head of the Primorsko-goranska County, Mr. Marko Filipović, Deputy Mayor of the City of Rijeka, as well as other well-respected members of the ecclesiastical, social, political and university community.

The President was given a copy of the reprint of the Glagolitic book "Misal hruacki" by Šimun Kožičić Benja as a gift and also had an opportunity to take a look at the original Charter of Ferdinand II about the founding of a Rijeka Jesuit College and a rare book from the Jesuit College holdings.

This also marks the 390th anniversary of the University Library founding, considering the fact that about 1,400 library holdings of the University Library Rijeka are based upon the books of the Jesuit College. Jesuit Order established the College and Highschool in 1627, with the library as its part. The Library in Rijeka continued working for the next 146 years. In 1633 the College gained academic freedom which raised the College Library to the level of higher education library. It is considered that this year also marks the beginning of higher education in Rijeka. The program of this celebration was sponsored by Madam President.
