Governance and Strategic Management
Friday, Sep 29 2017

Over the past week, from September 25 to 29, 2017, the first part of the accredited lifelong learning program entitled "Governance and Strategic Management in Higher Education" was held at the University of Rijeka Campus, as an integral part of the HEISEE initiative.

At the opening, the University of Rijeka Rector Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., held a welcoming speech in which she addressed the Higher Education Initiative for Southeastern Europe (HEISEE initiative), through which the program was developed. Madam Rector stated that together with our colleagues from the University of Georgia and the Institute for Development of Higher Education, we are here in an attempt to establish a program where research and researchers would create a strong impact in terms of university development. This primarily pertains to people that are managers within the system, such as deans, vice-deans, and heads of respective university departments. We strive to gain experience and transform Rijeka into a center of excellence for managers within the field of education, firstly in the higher education sector, and then discharge this knowledge and expand it towards the education of principals of other educational institutions. This is the start of a highly significant project that requires expertise and a lot of research - both academic and within the scope of our community, Madam Rector concluded.

The introductory lecture was held by the executive director of the HEISEE project, Lucija Brajković, Ph.D., while subsequent lectures were held by American experts from the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia.

The attendants were members of the Board of Directors of the University of Rijeka, Vice Rectors, student representatives, the University Library
Rijeka and the Student Centre Rijeka, along with respective managers of administrative and technical services from the UNIRI Rectorate - those who participated in the workshops throughout the last two years.

The second part of this educational program is set to be held in February 2018 and will include Croatian experts from the University of Rijeka, the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, the Agency for Science and Higher Education, and others, who will discuss topics from both the Croatian and the European perspective.
