Lecture of Prof. Nenad Miščević
Tuesday, Oct 17 2017

The Center for language studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka invites all to the lecture entitled: “The birth of Pragmatics”, which will be held on Friday, Oct 20th, at 2pm, by Professor Nenad Miščević Ph.D., from the University of Maribor, in room 105 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences at the UNIRI Campus, Sveučilišna avenija 4.

Most of the lecture will be dedicated to the historical development of Pragmatics – the middle of the 20th century. That development nicely illustrates the cooperation between Linguistics and Philosophy with authors like Austin, Searle and Grice. The focal point in their respective theories isn´t language as a linguistic system or individual languages with their semantics, but the speech act, sometimes referred to as “language use”.  This speech act is considered an action, led by a set of rules and motivated by a communicative intention. The problems of meaning, propositions, truth-values and other questions of the Philosophy of logic and theories of meaning enter the domain of consideration, but not as central question, but as problems subordinate to the topic of the speech acts.

A small part of the lecture is going to be dedicated to a contemporary topic – the boundary between Semantics and Pragmatics.

In the case of arguments and judgements, the position to be defended is the following: the semantic content provides a solid foundation, but the pragmatic additions are the building blocks to make the foundation whole and usable.

In that way, the lecture will present the main ideas of the upcoming book “The birth of Pragmatics”, the manuscript of which is just being finished.
