Heritage Talks at SVKRI

The University Library Rijeka begins this year also with the year-round cycle of lectures within the ''Colloquia Fluminensia – conversations with heritage'' project. The project is conceived as a cycle of permanent lectures and discussions on Rijeka topics for professors, students, cultural public and all interested citizens, and it is aimed at strengthening awareness of cultural identity and its importance in promoting common national and European values. The first cycle of 6 lectures was held in 2017.

There will be 6 lectures in total in 2018 – in February, March, April, May, and October. The lectures will be held every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the premises of the permanent cultural and historical exhibition "Glagoljica" at the University Library Rijeka.

This year's first lecture, ''The two Rijeka Illyrians – Dr. Vatroslav Vinko Medanić and Žiga noble Farkaš'', will be held by Prof. Irvin Lukežić, Ph.D., today, February 28th, 2018, at 6 p.m.

This lecture's topic is related to Rijeka at the time of the notorious Bach's absolutism, when the People's Reading Room Rijeka (Narodna čitaonica riečka) begins its work and for whose establishment two important people should be thanked – Dr. Ignac (Vatroslav) Vinko Medanić (1805 – 1856), a prominent Rijeka attorney, landlord, shipowner, and patrician councilor of the cities of Bakar and Rijeka, and Sigismund (Žiga, Šišman) noble Farkaš (1819 – 1898), a Zagreb-born gubernatorial officer, the official of the Rijeka Maritime Administration, the President of the Court and certainly the most prominent member of the Croatian National Revival in Rijeka, and the first president of the People's Reading Room Rijeka. The lecture will focus on the most important biographical details and features of their public activity, especially in the field of folk education and culture.
