Game-Assisted Learning

A workshop for teachers entitled ''Game-based learning and unplugged activities'' was held in the premises of the Department of Informatics of the University of Rijeka. The workshop was organized within the framework of the Erasmus+ project „Games for Learning Algorithnic Thinking – GLAT“ coordinated by the UNIRI Department of Informatics. The workshop was attended by 24 teachers from 13 elementary schools from the Rijeka region.
It is the first of three workshops or three modules for professional development of classroom teachers within the GLAT project and in cooperation with the Education Agency (AZOO). The aim of the project is to encourage the inclusion of coding and algorithmic thinking in teaching different subjects in lower grades of elementary school in a fun and attractive way. The emphasis is on using educational learning strategies by means of games that will stimulate creativity, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
During the workshop, the teachers attended lectures and demonstrations where they were introduced to the Game-Based Learning (GBL) and unplugged activities. They also participated in individual and group activities and analyzed sample games and unplugged activities for different school subjects. They were also introduced to the LePlanner tools and materials for unplugged activities (Web tools 2.0).
After the first workshops, GLAT project education will continue online – on a MoD e-learning system, in which teachers' work will be assessed by project team experts. Based on advice and feedback, teachers will develop improved versions of the learning scenarios that will be implemented in teaching with their students.
The next workshop on using online quizzes and logical tasks to stimulate computer thinking will take place on August 28 and 29, 2018.
