Dies Academicus

The Senate's Ceremonial Session held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at the UNIRI Faculty of Civil Engineering, marked the Day of the University – Dies Academicus. Professor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., University of Rijeka Rector, opened the Session and thanked members of the Senate, laureates and guests for coming. A letter written by Ms. Kolinda Grabar Kitarović, President of the Republic of Croatia, who accepted the sponsorship of the Day of the University, was then read.

Professor Vlado Guberac, Ph.D., President of the Croatian Rector's Congress and Rector of the University of Osijek, Mr. Marko Filipović, Deputy Mayor of the City of Rijeka, Ms. Marina Medarić, Deputy Head of the Primorsko-goranska County, and Prof. Branka Ramljak, Ph.D., State Secretary at the Ministry of Science and Education, Deputy Minister of Education and Representative of the Prime Minister, addressed the attendees with their welcoming speeches.

Academician Daniel Rukavina, M.D., Ph.D., the University of Rijeka Rector from 2000 to 2009, was awarded an honorary doctorate – honoris causa of the University of Rijeka. Professor Pero Lučin, M.D., Ph.D., the University of Rijeka Rector from 2009 to 2017, awarded the honorary doctorate to Professor Rukavina saying: "It is a tremendous honor, an exceptional opportunity, and an exceptional person. My teacher, mentor, colleague and dear friend Daniel Rukavina is to receive this honorary doctorate for a special and lasting contribution to the University of Rijeka. The implementation of the Bologna process and the significant momentum of natural sciences at the University of Rijeka for his mandate are just some of his great achievements. With 907 titles, out of which 253 are original scientific papers, the academician's contribution to the field of immunology, especially reproductive immunology, is priceless, and he is still working.''

Academician Rukavina addressed the attendees upon receiving the honorary doctorate: ''I have been working for 56 years, and I have met, I would dare say, hundreds of students. Most of them are better than me! Today I want to quote a well-known anthropologist Margareth Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. I am exceptionally happy to be succeeded by two excellent rectors: Pero and Snježana. Thank you for everything,'' academician Rukavina concluded.

Professor Alen Ružić, M.D., Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Science of the University of Rijeka, led the ceremony, while Madam Rector promoted four retired professors of the University of Rijeka who were awarded the title of professor emeritus on the Senate Sessions throughout last year: Prof. Julijan Dobrinić, Ph.D., from the UNIRI Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Čedomir Benac, Ph.D., from the UNIRI Faculty of Civil Engineering, and Prof. Branko Blažević, Ph.D., and Prof. Vidoje Vujić, Ph.D. from the UNIRI Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija.
