In Memoriam Daša Drndić

Professor Daša Drndić, Ph.D., from the UNIRI Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the award-winning Croatian writer, passed away on Tuesday, June 5th, 2018, in Rijeka, after a long battle with serious illness. She has been teaching at the Department of English Language and Literature from 1999 to 2011 when she retired. She was a course instructor in courses covering modern British literature and creative writing and inspired generations of students.

Daša Drndić was born in Zagreb in 1946. She studied English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, as a Fulbright scholar she attended Southern Illinois University and then Case Western Reserve University. She earned her doctorate degree at the University of Rijeka. She worked as an editor in the "Vuk Karadžić" publishing house, as a professor of English at the National University "Đuro Salaj" and as an editor-playwright on Radio-Television Belgrade.

She published prose, literary criticism, analytical texts and translations in magazines and literary gazettes, as well as plays and documentary radio shows.

She published numerous works during her lifetime: Put do subote (1982), Kamen s neba (1984), Marija Częstohowska još uvijek roni suze ili Umiranje u Torontu (1997), Canzone di guerra (1998), Totenwande (2000), Doppelgänger (2002), Leica format (2003), After Eight (2005), Feministički rukopis ili politička parabola (2006), Sonnenschein (2007), April u Berlinu (2009), Belladonna (2012) and EEG (2016).

The novel Sonnenschein won the 2007 ''Fran Bobović'' Award for the Best Book of Country Topic and the ''Kiklop'' Award for the Fiction of the Year. The novel also won Independent Foreign Fiction READERS Prize in 2013. Daša Drndić won the International Literary Award ''Prozart'' in 2014.
