Science, Not Prejudice

The first Conference of the International Scientific Council (ISC) of the University of Rijeka, entitled ''Science First – Science, Not Prejudice'', will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018, in the premises of the Student Center's Café ''Akvarij'' at the University of Rijeka Campus.

The conference will be attended by members of the ISC, Croatian scientists currently working at universities around the world:

Prof. Ivan Đikić, M.D., Ph.D., Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany,

Prof. Željko Ivezić, Ph.D., University of Washington,

Prof. Danica Kragić, Ph.D., KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm,

Prof. Igor Mezić, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara,

Prof. Nenad Mišćević, Ph.D., University of Maribor, Central European University in Budapest,

Prof. Aleksandra Kanjuo Mrčela, Ph.D., University of Ljubljana,

Prof. Winfried Pickl, M.D., Ph.D., Medical University of Vienna,

Prof. Dražen Prelec, Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology,

Prof. Igor Žutić, Ph.D., State University of New York at Buffalo.

Professor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., University of Rijeka Rector, will hold an introductory presentation explaining the reasons and the topic of the Conference of International Scientific Council, established at the University of Rijeka in early 2018.

The Conference will be moderated by Ms. Tanja Rudež, a journalist from the Daily Jutarnji List, and will have two parts.

The morning part of the Conference will take the form of the TED Talks conferences. The presenters, respective Professors Mezić, Mišćević, Kanjuo Mrčela, Pickl, Prelec, and Žutić, will hold presentations regarding their scientific achievements by contextually linking them to the aforementioned topic of the Conference.

The second part of the Conference will be a roundtable (panel) discussion on the topic of ''The Future of Science and Higher Education in Croatia''. Apart from the members of the ISC, the participants of a roundtable discussion are Prof. Boris Jokić, Ph.D., Research Associate and a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Ms. Zrinka Ristić Dedić, Research Associate at the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, and Mr. Boris Popović, President of the Competitiveness Council of Urban Agglomeration Rijeka. Respective Professors Đikić, Kragić, and Ivezić will join the discussion via Skype.

The Conference is conceived as a place of the exchange of opinions and experiences between competent experts that should result in as many quality conclusions as possible, as well as in concrete guidelines for the development of science and higher education in Croatia. Considering the scientists' fields of interest, as well as the environment in which science in Croatia operates, the event's topics will thus be in relation to the development of science and higher education in Croatia: from limited financing and lack of priority, through a collapsed economy that does not recognize the need to invest in new technologies, to a general situation where one encounters more and more ''alternative facts'', as well as the associated denial of scientific knowledge.
