On Challenges of Populism

The University of Rijeka and the Primorje-Istra Branch of the Croatian Public Relations Association invite all interested to attend a roundtable discussion entitled Challenges of Populism in Contemporary Europe, which will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at 6 pm at the Student Center's Café ''Akvarij'' at the University of Rijeka Campus (Radmile Matejčić 5).

The participants of the roundtable discussion are Associate Prof. Marijana Grbeša, Ph.D., and Associate Prof. Berto Šalaj, Ph.D., both from the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb and co-authors of the book ''Dobar, loš ili zao? Populizam u Hrvatskoj'', and Associate Prof. Nebojša Zelić, Ph.D., from the UNIRI Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Mr. Boris Pavelić, a journalist at the Daily Novi list.

The roundtable discussion will also be attended by Mr. Zlatko Komadina, Head of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Mr. Marko Filipović, Deputy Mayor of the City of Rijeka, and Prof. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., University of Rijeka Rector.

Professor Elvio Baccarini, Ph.D., from the Department of Philosophy at the UNIRI Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, will be the moderator.

Populism is a term often used to describe a phenomenon in public life. But is everything we label with the term really populism and how much is it present and influential in contemporary Europe? Are the Croatian political parties populist and why? What happens when populists take executive power? What is the relationship between the media and populism? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed during the discussion.

The media sponsor of the roundtable discussion is the Daily Novi List.
