45 Years of the Study of Law

A ceremonial session of the Faculty Council of the UNIRI Faculty of Law held on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018, marked the 45th anniversary of the study of law in Rijeka. Professor Vesna Crnić Grotić, Ph.D., Dean of the UNIRI Faculty of Law, led the ceremony, and Prof. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., University of Rijeka Rector, addressed the attendees on behalf of the University of Rijeka.

Professor Vesna Crnić Grotić, Ph.D., thanked all the associates, employees, colleagues and students who contributed to the today's quality of the UNIRI Faculty of Law. She pointed out that it may not be the right time to practice law, especially because it is largely a national profession, but there are exceptions.

Madam Rector stated: ''The anniversary of your Faculty coincides with our anniversary, i.e. with the 45th anniversary of the University of Rijeka. Your institution has been producing brilliant lawyers for generations, and today even through up to 6 different levels of study. We are aware that changes are necessary, but also that they are difficult and sometimes call for leaving one's own comfort zone. We are facing new challenges, but since the Faculty of Law has always been able to keep track of these challenges, for example, changes in legislation upon Croatia's accession to the European Union, we have no doubt that such will be the case even in the future. The University will certainly support you on your upcoming journey in order to get one step closer to the third generation university together.''

Mr. Vojko Obersnel, M.Sc., City of Rijeka Mayor, referred to the past times when the legal study (predecessor of today's UNIRI Faculty of Law) was founded by the Municipality of Rijeka, an act that would not be feasible today.

Mr. Zlatko Komadina, Head of the Primorje-Gorski kotar County, pointed out that the highly educated staff of the University of Rijeka is the initiator of the development of the Primorje-Gorski kotar County.

Professor Željko Bartulović, Ph.D., presented historical data, looking back at the very beginning of the legal study in Rijeka 45 years ago.
