Rijeka ECOC2020 Countdown

The City of Rijeka officially started the Rijeka: European Capital of Culture 2020 countdown on Friday, February 1st, 2019, releasing the balloons and setting up a countdown timer on a steel interactive sculpture. Rijeka ECOC2020 project’s official opening ceremony will be held for exactly 365 days.

Rijeka is the first Croatian city ever to win the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture, and the multi-annual process of creative creation and preparation for ECOC2020 is nearing its end.

Mr. Vojko Obersnel, M.Sc., City of Rijeka Mayor, and Ms. Emina Višnić, Director of the Rijeka 2020 Ltd., addressed the attendees. Professor Marta Žuvić, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Quality Assurance, and Prof. Alen Ružić, M.D., Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Science, addressed the attendees on behalf of the University of Rijeka Management.

Mr. Obersnel stated: ''Let me greet all of you on this typical rainy day in Rijeka. Let us hope that the sun – the symbol of this project – will prevail the rain. This sculpture is full of symbols. Its shape of a crane symbolizes Rijeka Harbor’s activity – one of the most recognizable elements of our city. The wheels represent all the citizens in our "port of diversity", which must work together to make this project the best it can be.''

Exactly at noon, students from the ''Nikola Tesla'' Primary School released the balloons that flew into the air, started the lever and revealed the countdown timer, thus marking the beginning of Rijeka ECOC2020 countdown.
